As a reputable Indianapolis area design and home remodeling contractor, we try our best to educate consumers on making smart decisions when it comes to hiring contractors. Whether we get hired for the job or not, we feel its is appropriate to warn homeowners against the perils of chosing inexperienced handymen, carpenters, electricians or any other trade associated with home improvement.
Sure, it is doubly important to do your homework in selecting a contractor on a high cost, extensive remodel project. But, the same holds true when it comes to relatively simple and inexpensive projects. Sometimes these projects, if done improperly can lead to trouble and required costly repairs in the end.
For example, we recently met with a client who had a leaking window well in his Indianapolis basement. Apparently, the basement was finished by a contractor and all in all, turned out very nice….complete with wet bar! Unfortunately, the same contractor who did a nice job with the interior basement finish also installed the window well and the window within. Long story short, the window opening and the window were improperly flashed which allowed water to penetrate to the interior of the basement. Thankfully, the infiltration was caught quickly and major damage was avoided.
Remodeling is not a perfect science. Problems occur and mistakes sometimes happen. It is the nature of the beast. But, just because someone declares themselves a contractor or a remodeler does not always mean they have the necessary skills to tackle every home improvement or remodeling situation. Be wary of “one-man shows” who are their “company”.
Instead, research remodeling and home improvement companies in Indianapolis who have been around for a while and have a proven track record.s of client satisfaction. Check out on-line remodeling reviews and ask for references of past clients. Ask the tough questions. Its your home. Even a small project can turn into a big problem if the work was performed improperly.
